Effects of some environmental factors on yearling traits of Columbia and Targhee ewes.

چکیده
S ELECTION of breeding ewes is often complicated by environmental factors which tend to obscure genetic merit. Correction or adjustment for measurable effects of environmental factors may increase the effectivehess of selection for meat and wool production. These corrections will also be useful in many experimental studies where it is desirable to minimize the complication of environmental effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of age of dam, type of birth, year of birth, age at shearing, and inbreeding on yearling traits of Columbia and Targhee ewes. The traits studied were staple length, grease fleece weight, body weight, body type, condition (degree of fatness), face covering and neck folds. Breed differences in these traits were also observed. Breed crosses used in the development of Targhee sheep.
T HE development of the Targhee breed of sheep began in i9=6 when the Bureau of Animal Industry at the U. S. Sheep Experiment Station, Dubois, Idaho mated select Rambouillet rams with select ewes of Corriedale XLincoln-Rambouillet and Lincoln XRambouillet combinations. Descendants of these crosses have been interbred and carefully selected to produce Targhee sheep. Spencer and Stoehr (x94L) hav...
متن کاملProduction of yearling Targhee or Finn-Dorset-Targhee ewes managed as a farm or range flock.
Production data from 681 yearling ewes were evaluated for the effect of ewe breed and management system on fertility, prolificacy, lamb birth weight, lamb survival, lamb weaning weight, ewe fleece weight, and total lamb weight weaned per ewe exposed. Two hundred seven straightbred Targhee (T) and 474 1/4 Finn-1/4 Dorset-1/2 Targhee (FDT) crossbred ewes managed in a range or farm flock system we...
متن کاملEffects of level of energy intake and energy demand on growth hormone, insulin, and metabolites in Targhee and Suffolk ewes.
Yearling ewes (n = 32) were used in a 2x2x2 factorial experiment to determine effects of breed (Targhee vs. Suffolk), energy intake (1x vs. 3x NEm requirements, and physiological status (nonpregnant, nonlactating vs. lactating) on serum GH, insulin, NEFA, glucose, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentrations. Blood collections were made in two periods that began 21 and 32 d after ewes lambed. L...
متن کاملInfluence of body weight, age, and weight gain on fertility and prolificacy in four breeds of ewe lambs.
Breeding ewes to lamb at 1 yr of age can improve profitability for some production systems. The first objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of age and weight at breeding and total postweaning weight gain on reproductive performance of ewe lambs. The second objective was to compare the effects of weight and age variables in four major sheep breeds (Columbia, Polypay, Rambouillet, an...
متن کاملGenetic correlation of ram sexual performance with ewe reproductive traits of four sheep breeds
Rams express differences in sexual performance during the breeding season. Breeding rams with high sexual performance scores as measured during a sexual performance test can improve flock fertility. Whether selecting rams for high sexual performance score will indirectly improve ewe reproductive performance is not known. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic correlation betwee...
